Ready to take the plunge and join Instagram for your business?
WELCOME my friend, this is a great opportunity for you to build your audience, create brand awareness, and increase your sales on a free platform that is used by BILLIONS around the world, and right on your doorstep, all of which are potential customers. Winner!
But, have you tried to create a profile and have no idea where to start or what to do and gotten a little overwhelmed?
I get it! Things that are new to us can sometimes make us put our heads in the sand and we just ignore it and push it to the bottom of our to-do lists, am I right? I was exactly the same when it came to being self-employed and organising my finances, but lucky for me I took on the help from the legends at Walton Accountancy.
I’ve put together some of my top tips below for everything you need before starting an Instagram profile.
Ready to take your head out of the sand and start chatting with your customers, find new ones and show off what you can do?
Let’s go! So first up…..
Have you checked if your business name is available on Instagram? I hate to be the one to break it to you, BUT there is rather a large chance that your business name could have already been taken. I mean in 2020 there are 1 billion users active per month so you can only imagine how many names this is!
If you find your business name is already taken, consider one of these solutions:
Adding a special character such as a . or an _ between the words or at the end
Adding your specific location to your account name
Create an abbreviation of your name
Add your country eg. UK, USA, AU
Adding a descriptor - eg. restaurant, bar, cafe, artist, handmade, by ‘your name’
Don’t forget you can have your actual business name as your ‘NAME’ on Instagram.
Make sure you include exactly what you do! Can you describe your account or business in 3 words? Use this as your Name!
For example, mine is:

What’s the point of having a shop if you don’t have a door? Include your website link on your profile to draw customers to your website and learn more about you and your business.
No website? Don’t panic! I know plenty of instagram influencers without a website that direct their followers to one of the 3 options below:
If you don’t have any of the 3 options above or a website, I’d really recommend getting one, it adds to your brand’s reputability. If you are a brand new business then starting on Instagram is, of course, fine, but make a mental note that as you progress to grow onto other channels.
What should be your profile picture? You definitely need one that’s for certain. There are 3 options that you can choose for your profile picture.
Logo - This is the most common profile image that I suggest for businesses as it creates brand awareness, familiarity, and image.
Photo of you - This is what I suggest if you are planning to market yourself and are the brand! For example, if you are a coach, influencer, speaker, musician, performer or a TV personality.
Photo of your business premises - Now this is an option IF your premises or product are the main part of your image, however, I would seriously suggest using your logo over this option.
Tell your customers exactly who you are, what you do, how you can help them and where you are. Think of your bio as your 30-second elevator pitch but on super speed, its more like 10 seconds!
You only get one shot at a first impression!
First impressions count so make sure:
There are no spelling mistakes
You use relevant emojis
The spacing is correct
You explain exactly what you do
Are you ready to make your social media and website stand out but don’t have the time to build your social media profile in the first place? Don’t panic! That’s exactly how I can help, I help brands and small businesses create and manage their social media profiles and make them stand out from the crowd, engage their audience, look the real deal and ultimately, increase brand awareness and sales.
Don't forget, treat your Instagram like your shop window, provide useful and valuable information!
